I
was facing my own history through my work when war
in ex-Yougoslavia burst out, forcing me to face History
and the World.
I felt very overwhelmed by this terrible conflict
which seemed to me the most serious conflict since
the camps of the second world war.
I was working more precisely on my friend Poncho,
the mexican painter, Alfonso Dominguez and
I did'nt want to have to choose between these two
concerns, that's why I went on painting my friend
with the dislocation of the map of Yougoslavie as
background (see picture).
To bind together two things which were not supposed
to have anything to do one with the other is for me
the expression of what I consider the spirit of collage,
if not its technique.
I worked for about three years on Bosnia, the people
of Sarajevo, all the victimes and particularly the
refugees and the massacre of Srebrenica, Gorazde,
Foca and so many. of our so called "protected
zones" protected by us,
"the big international Powers" !
2000
- Two posters of my paintings of refugees
have been published by UNESCO.
